How long do lilies last
Lilies are one of the longer-lasting cut flowers available. With proper care, they typically last up to 14 days. They often arrive with some buds still closed, gradually opening over several days, giving the recipient an arrangement that evolves.
Removing the pollen-bearing stamens as soon as the flowers open is strongly recommended. This prevents the pollen from staining surfaces and fabric.
How to care for them
Trim the stems at a 45 degree angle on arrival and place them in a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. As soon as the first blooms open, carefully remove the stamens using a tweezers or tissue. Note, be careful as the pollen may stain skin.
Change the water every two to three days and re-trim the stems each time. Keep lilies away from direct sunlight and heat. Their fragrance is strong and often cause a of headaches. They are especially more fragrant in a warm room and a cooler environment will extend their vase life.
Are lilies safe for cats and dogs
Are lilies toxic to cats?
This is the most important thing to know about lilies: they are extremely toxic to cats. Lily species including Oriental, Asiatic, Tiger lilies and Calla Lilies (seperate guide) can cause acute kidney failure in cats, and even small amounts of pollen, water from the vase, or petals can be fatal. If you have a cat at home, do not allows lilies into your houme under any circumstances.
Lilies are less severely toxic to dogs, but can still cause gastrointestinal upset and should be kept out of reach. If you suspect your cat has been in contact with a lily, contact your vet immediately.
