Snapdragon (Antirrhinum)

Snapdragons add height to arrangements and found in many of our Florist’s Pick bouquets. Their tall natures makes them one of florist’s favourite flowers for structure and a recipient’s favourite for their unusual and quirky vase life. They also offer great value because of their longevity.

What each snapdragon colour means and when to gift them

Pink snapdragons represent grace and admiration an are a popular choice for arrangements sent to someone you want to delight.

White snapdragons carry meanings of purity and innocence, commonly used in wedding flowers and sympathy arrangements.

Yellow snapdragons represent positivity and goodness. They are a wonderful addition to birthday and congratulations arrangements, particularly when paired with other bright flowers.

Purple and violet snapdragons carry mystery and sophistication. They are a distinctive choice for anyone who appreciates something a little different from the conventional colour palette.

How long do snapdragons last

Snapdragons when well kept are a long-lasting cut flower, typically lasting up to ten days. One of their most appealing qualities is the way the blooms open progressively from the bottom of the spike upwards, which means the arrangement continues to multiply in size.

Given their vase life and full bloom characteristics, this is why they are great value for money.

How to care for them

Trim the stems at a 45 degree angle on arrival and place them in a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Snapdragons are upright flowers and prefer a tall, narrow vase that supports their stems.

Change the water every two days and re-trim the bottom of the stems each time. Keep snapdragons away from direct sunlight and heat. They prefer a cool environment, which is one of the reasons they are at their best during the cooler months of the year.

As the lower blooms fade, you can remove them carefully to keep the arrangement looking fresh and to allow the upper buds to continue opening.

Are snapdragons safe for cats and dogs

Yes. Snapdragons are non-toxic to both cats and dogs. They are one of our favourite safe choices for houses with pets.
