Statice (Limonium)

Statice is one of our favourite filler flower and is a regular in our floral designs. Its tiny, papery blooms cluster along branching stems to create a cloud-like texture adding depth to any arrangement. It is often used as a filler flower, but statice deserves recognition in its own right it is one of the most long-lasting cut flowers available. Limonium dries beautifully, retaining its colour and shape meaning you can display decoratively months.

What each statice colour means and when to gift them

Purple statice is the most widely used variety and carries meanings of remembrance, sympathy and success.

White statice represents purity, innocence, and peace. It is widely used in wedding flowers and sympathy arrangements.

Pink statice communicates affection, happiness and appreciation. It is a popular addition to birthday bouquets and Mother’s Day arrangements.

Yellow statice represents cheerfulness and optimism. It is a bright, uplifting addition to mixed arrangements and works particularly well in summer bouquets alongside sunflowers and gerberas.

How long does statice last

Statice is exceptional for its longevity. As a fresh cut flower, it typically lasts up to three weeks. However, is that it can also be dried to retain its colour and shape almost indefinitely.

How to care for them

Trim the stems at a 45 degree angle on arrival and place them in a clean vase with fresh, cool water. Remove any leaves that would sit below the waterline. Statice is not particularly demanding of care, which makes it a recipients dream and great for get well soon flowers.

Change the water every two to three days and re-trim the stems each time. Keep statice away from direct sunlight and heat. If you wish to dry the statice, hang the stems upside down in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space once the fresh flowers have reached their peak or just tip out the water and leave in the vase.
