Tulip Mania: The Spring Icon Your Vase Is Screaming For

Tulip Mania: The Spring Icon Your Vase Is Screaming For

The OG Drama Queen

Move over, Peonies. There’s a new (well, technically very old) icon in town. If the Peony is the prom queen, the Tulip is the cool girl; effortlessly chic, slightly unpredictable and capable of a "glow up" like no other. At FlowerFix, we’re calling it right now, Tulip season is the best time of the year.

But forget those sad, supermarket bunches. We’re talking about the head turning varieties, the ruffly Parrot tulips and  large headed double tulips.

Did you know that in the 1600s, a single tulip bulb cost more than a house in Amsterdam? It was called Tulip Mania. While we won’t ask you to trade your mortgage for a bouquet, we do think they’re worth the hype.

Unlike most flowers, tulips keep growing after they’re cut. They’re literally alive in your vase, stretching toward the light and dancing into new shapes. If yours start to curve, don't panic, they're not dying; they're just looking for their spotlight.

Style Guide: Which Tulip Are You?

  • The Classicist: Clean, crisp white tulip bouquets. Perfect for that clean girl aesthetic.

  • The Extrovert: Parrot Tulips. With fringed, multi-coloured petals that look like tropical feathers, these are for the ones who want to be noticed.

  • The Romantic: Double Tulips. These have so many layers of petals they’re often mistaken for peonies. All the fluff, half the price.

The FLOWERFIX freshness hack

Tulips are thirsty, but they’re also a bit... dramatic. Here’s how to maximise vase life:

  1. The Cold Shoulder: Tulips love cold water. It keeps their stems firm and prevents them from over stretching.

  2. The Pin Prick: A florist’s secret? Take a safety pin and prick a tiny hole just below the flower head. It releases air bubbles and stops them drooping.

  3. Keep Away from the Fruit Bowl: Your bananas are the enemy. They release ethylene gas which makes tulips age faster.

  4. Give them coins: this is weird trick, pop a very old copper penny into the vase. Studies show that copper helps keep them fresh and remain upright.

Whether you’re sending a letterbox tulip delivery to your bestie or treating your own coffee table to a luxury tulip bouquet, these stems bring a pop of dopamine that no other flower can match.
